Are you viral traffic ready?

Imagine you wrote a blog post on your website or created a kick ass Facebook post that unexpectedly went viral or you got some GREAT coverage from another media outlet.  You’d be high fiving yourself all over the place I imagine…with all that viral traffic I know I would be.

Would you be in a position to capture that extra, viral traffic and continue building a relationship with them?

Or, would they remain a spike on your traffic stats, never to return again?

If you have managed capture someone’s attention with a piece of content then chances are you have more they’ll be interested in than that post alone.

So, how do you capture viral traffic to your website in a way that will enable you to bring them back to your business?

Track them.

Make sure you have your Facebook Retargeting Pixel installed on your website and are generating an audience from it.

Regardless of whether your website is your blog or your business having the pixel installed will enable you to retarget previous traffic next time you have a great piece of content to share or an offer you really want people to know about.

If people have engaged with you online previously then chances are they’ll do it again if you give them the opportunity.

Want to take your tracking and retargeting one step further, install your Google Analytics & Adwords Tags and retarget people all around the internet.

Offer them more.

Let’s say your post has started to go crazy…jump in and add some relevant, suggested further reading to keep people on your website longer.  This will give people the opportunity to further engage with you and you’ll continue to grow your authority.

Add a Call to Action.

This could be something as simple as a ‘sign up’ button so that people get your blog posts delivered direct to them. Better still, offer them some incentive to join your mailing list.  If you don’t have an email list yet then ask them to follow you on your most active social media platform, this will create a second point of contact with you.

Optimise your pop up.

Yes, I said it.  Pop up.  We all kind of love to hate them on websites but the truth is that they DO work.  You will get plenty of people joining your mailing list that never would otherwise.

Be clever with how you set them up. Pop-ups don’t have to be right there in someone’s face as soon as they land on your website.  It’s possible to set them to appear:

  • After someone has scrolled down a percentage of your page,
  • After a specific period of time
  • When the user signals their intent to click away from your website.

Ideally your pop ups should be set differently for mobile device and desktop.

Follow Up.

You’ve managed to pull off something pretty incredible by producing a piece of viral content.  Don’t be overwhelmed into feeling like this is something that you have to do over and over.

However, make sure that you do follow up and give people more of what they loved last time.  this is how you end up with an audience that sticks around and forms a community around your business.

Putting a solid content strategy in place across all three of the key online touchpoints (social media, website and email) will ensure that you consistently give your audience more of the great stuff that led them to you.

How many of the boxes have you managed to tick for your business?
