What does your businesses online strategy look like?

I know that you’ve questioned it before. Asked yourself ‘Is social media right for my business?’ Chances are you’ve decided that it’s not a good fit several times and backed off on it.

No doubt you’ve looked at your online strategy and wondered exactly why are you doing this.

The Kardashians are proof that social media is the PERFECT fit for your business. Proof that implementing a killer online strategy can catapult your business into star territory REGARDLESS of your industry.

FACT: Your business landscape is changing.

How people choose a business has shifted.

Business models are disrupting the status quo.

Expectations have evolved.

The need to implement a great online strategy for your business is not going to go away.

My 14 year old daughter is a case in point of what consumers and clients are looking for when selecting a product or service.

Yes, she’s an extreme example, BUT ten years down the track she’s one of the many who’ll be looking to engage your services or buy your product. The generation ten years her senior have similar expectations to hers. If you’re in denial about that then you need to remove your head from wherever it’s firmly stuck and wake up.

Right now you’re asking yourself ‘What do the Kardashians and a 14 year old girl have to do with how I market my business?’ Let me share a story with you to explain.

Cyber Monday.

The entire US online marketplace is on sale.

14 year old daughter wants to purchase some ‘Kylie lipstick’ (no, she doesn’t mean Minogue, she means Jenner) because it’s on sale and it’s amazing.

Businesswoman mother sees the perfect opportunity for a lesson on why local and boutique businesses need consideration too. I suggested seeking out an independent Australian brand instead and explained to her how having local businesses support our (her parent’s) business, in favour of cheap offshore alternatives, is essential for us to maintain the roof over her head.

“But Mum, I really want the Kylie stuff because it’s awesome and I really love her on snapchat, she’s soooooo funny” I think there was a comment about cats in there too. Nothing like a cat doing something craaaazy on the internet to get attention.

I suggested she ask Google for some Australian alternatives and meanwhile I turned to my bitches on Facebook and asked for recommendations for Aussie businesses because my daughter was determined to give her hard earned bling to a Kardashian.

It didn’t take long before I had more suggestions than we needed. One by one I passed them on to my daughter and she looked them up.

No. No. No.

Not interested.

Only Kylie’s lip kits will suffice.

A number of ladies had suggested Stevie K, a boutique lippie brand from Melbourne. Miss 14 had checked it out briefly and noted the King Kylie lipstick but, despite the edgy branding, it was still a no.

Nothing was getting past the fact that Kylie Jenner is her BFF on Snapchat.

But then the pivotal thing happened.

The founder of Stevie K commented, shared a snippet of her business story, confirmed that King Kylie was named after the Kardashian before she even had a brand of her own and offered a discount code for us to use.

After reading Katie’s comment Miss 14 had that Lipstick in her cart quicker than a flash and less than 24 hours later she had confirmation that it was winging its way to her.

Hello?

What changed in that split second?

What was it that took my 14 year old from nonchalance to devotee?

Personal connection.

It’s the thing that makes the difference between you and the other guy.

If your potential client knows that you barrack for the same football team, not the arch enemy, that will make a difference in whether they choose you as their accountant.

In this highly digital world we live in personal connection matters more than ever before.

That’s why your About page is the next place most people go after they visit the homepage of your website. And, it’s exactly why social media is critical for your business because it allows people to connect with you in their natural environment.

Implementing a great online strategy will only get more important for your business success

The way in which you orchestrate your entire online strategy, from website to social media to email and whatever else might come along, will impact on whether people choose to engage with you, or not.

Status quo is old school. Sure, wear a suit if you want to but consider pairing it with kicks instead. Share your knowledge, don’t lock it away. In this modern world people can google anything, be their source and charge them for implementation. The stuff you know is what makes you credible. So does your face.

You do have an audience on Facebook, on Instagram, on Snapchat, on Twitter and all those other platforms that haven’t even been seeded yet.

Your future clients and customers want to see you show up…real, raw, meaningful, inspirational and believable. They want to engage with you.

Your business, irrespective of what you’re selling, service or product based needs an injection of Kardashian if you want to thrive. If you want to grow and build and client/customer base beyond face to face networks then you need to be prepared to meet your ideal audience on their home turf.

Better yet, push the boundaries and release your businesses inner Kardashian. Don’t lose sight of your company values, it’s imperative that you stick to them, but shake of the status quo of old perceptions. Push some boundaries and be willing to reveal more of the inner workings of your business in a way that connects with your potential client or customer.

I can’t promise that a single comment will convert like it did with my daughter but I can promise that the single comment or post you make that your competitor doesn’t is pushing you further ahead.

All you need to do is stick with it and be willing to shift with your audience’s expectations.
